Winery Profile: Homewood Winery

Homewood Winery is owned and operated by Winemaker/ Owner David Homewood and located in Sonoma, California. David is originally from Illinois and attended college there prior to moving to California. David met up with his friend Chuck in 1979 and moved to Foster City. In 1983, David, Chuck, and another friend started making their first lot of Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley grapes and won a Silver Medal at the Santa Rosa Home Winemakers Harvest Fair. This sparked the beginning of David’s future winemaking career. In 1984, David started taking wine classes at Santa Rosa Junior College to enhance his winemaking experience.

Homewood wines are unique and David’s many years of experience in winemaking are proven by his substantial knowledge and distinctive choice of varietals. Homewood white wines range from Pinot Gris, Albarino, Viognier and Rousanne to his Old Vine Riesling and Late Harvest Semillon. The medley of varietals partnered with David’s knowhow produce some fantastic white wines loaded with fruit and fresh aromas that are common to his winemaking techniques. The red wines are equally matched, which are exhibited in their Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel, Barbera, Mouvedre, and Petite Syrah. The Grenache and Syrah red blends “le delice de la vallee” and “a la votre!” are not to be looked over either as they have impressive personalities that reflect David’s individuality. Finished off with a Late Harvest Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel Port to add to Homewood’s impressive portfolio.

The Homewood Winery is not your typical winery in the sense that it feels more like home. Upon entering Homewood, we got the impression that we were at someone’s house and not the traditional setting that some wineries possess. Of course, this is more than likely because it is home to David, and what better way to express yourself than living and working in the same environment. Homewood sits on an acre of land and it appeared to us that everything fits perfectly within the footprint of the property. The property includes an outdoor patio area, an indoor and outdoor tasting area, a Reserve tasting room, and of course the Winery Facility. We were fortunate to sit outside and the weather was excellent that day. It was a perfect way to enjoy Homewood’s personal atmosphere. We recommend visiting David at Homewood and allow yourself the pleasure of great wines and atmosphere from one of the true winemakers in Sonoma.
