Wine Regions of Europe – Malta

The Mediterranean island of Malta has no wine regions per se, but it does produce wine, with five producers on Malta itself and two on Malta’s smaller island of Gozo. Malta has two indigenous varieties, the Gellewza which makes soft fragrant reds and rosé, and the Ghirgentina, the source of full-bodied white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon has also been successful here, as have Syrah and Mourvèdre. Malta began a quality labeling system in 2007 when it introduce the DOK designation, the equivalent to the EU PDO, and an IGT designation a little lower down.
