Hotel Spotlight: Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort, Thailand

Thailand is a beautiful and magical country of charm and grace. Fringed by some of the best beaches in the world and famed for its vibrant food. But unless one intends to sleep on the beach (it’s illegal and not recommended) then a hotel is needed, and hopefully a good one.

Outrigger is a chain of high-end hotels dotted across the globe and at the very best locations. The Phuket branch is the first one I have visited, and it’s outstanding. The public spaces reflect traditional Thai design with teak wood aplenty, high ceilings in the reception area, tranquil ponds, cozy seating and gracious service. It seems that one is never far from a welcoming smile. Rooms are well-appointed and spacious with technology and contemporary amenities. Linen is crisp and bright; the bath towels are fluffy, and the huge alcove daybed beckons the weary traveler. The hotel is divided into wings set about central courtyards, with trees and the sound of a splashing water feature to enhance this tropical idyll.

Play.

It is set right by the beach, although the large and serpentine pool fringed with umbrellas is popular with folks who are more interested in a good book than water sports. The youngest guests, between 4 and 12 years old, have an area especially for them. There is able staff on hand to amuse toddlers and young children with toys and books. There are pool games for little ones, but the more adventurous will happily spend their days rushing down the 55-meter waterslide.

The celebrated Tennis Centre offers customized lessons for all ages and levels of skill, with professional coaching. There is golf available nearby as well as bike rides, yoga, paddle-boarding, archery, water polo, beach volleyball, beach soccer, badminton, squash, and table tennis. One could build up quite an appetite after all that exercise.

Eat.

So, there is that food to consider. Yes, kids are catered for, and they might be happy to find familiar favorites such as burgers and pizza, but they will also likely appreciate the evenings when The Locavore restaurant presents special nights of Pasta, Lobster or Barbecue. These are great dining experiences for the whole family. The à la carte menu tempts with classic Thai and other Asian dishes. They are mouth-watering and my favorite plates at Outrigger. Don’t miss the stunning traditional desserts that are truly worthy of an Instagram post or two.

Dinner isn’t the only meal served at The Locavore. The day starts with breakfast which could well offer one of the best morning spreads in Phuket. There is something for every taste, reflecting the international composition of its guests. There are the usual European/American suspects of made-to-order egg dishes and piles of bacon, but don’t miss the flavourful curries, noodle dishes, salads, breads, pastries and platters of exotic fruits.

The Mediterranean food at Outrigger is quite a draw. Metzo’s has a menu full of Middle Eastern and Med dishes that range from small mezze plates to spreads of the most exquisitely grilled meats. I highly recommend the lamb chops. This is the perfect venue for families or groups who will enjoy tasting and sharing these unique specialties.

Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort is a luxurious spot for relaxing, working out and exploring the area. Every guest will find their perfect vacation, with either a tennis racket or a best-seller to fill their days in Phuket – and there will never be enough of those.
